Hola senors and senoritas! Wassup? ... I'll tell you what's up, TODAY WE HAVE AN AWESOMLEY AWESOME GUEST W
What is the best quality Autumn has?
Oooo, great question! My first thought was to say that she’s extremely brave, but I think the quality that trumps that is her love for her family.
What do you want your readers to learn from the book?
Primarily, I want readers to have fun with the book! There’s nothing better than a chuckling reader! ;-) But if I had to pick one thing that I’d love for readers to remember, it’s that the people of Cades Cove, TN sacrificed the homes that their families had owned for generations so that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park could exist.
Did you always wanted to be a author?
Always! J Well, pretty much. When I went to college, I majored in aerospace engineering (Me! A rocket scientist – ha!). I eventually found my way into a public relations degree, with a fondness for journalism. But I didn’t have the fearlessness that it takes to be a good reporter. So I rediscovered my love of writing fiction once I’d been in the “real world” a few years. (Who wouldn’t want to build their own world when you sit behind a desk all day?!)
As a side note, when I was in sixth grade, I had the amazing opportunity to interview Madeleine L’Engle (!) by telephone. When I told her I wanted to be a writer, she replied, “Good for you! Keep reading and you can do it!” I’ll never forget it.
What was the best and worst part of becoming a published writer?
The best part is always, always hearing from people who’ve read the book, and who love to discuss their ideas. The best!
The worst part? Honestly, there haven’t been many. The most difficult part is juggling time between promoting Autumn and finishing the book I’m working on now.
Are you going to continue Autumn's tale or are you going to start something different?
I’m working on something new, called Selling Hope (Or, Gaining Glorious Asylum from Mr. Halley’s Fiery Beast). It’s set in 1910 Chicago, and features an entrepreneurial vaudeville performer named Hope. It’s been a blast, researching vaudeville and Halley’s Comet, but it’s vastly different from Autumn. It’s fun, writing something different.
What is one question you want me to ask you?
Um…how about: “I’d like to buy 1,382 copies of your book. Where can I find it?” J
And my answer would be: “Well, aren’t you nice! You can find the book here, on Amazon.com, or here, at Powell’s Books. And might I say how lovely you look today? That really is your color…” J
What is the craziest dream that you've ever gotten?
I’m not sure I remember the craziest, but I do remember one of my first nightmares. I was three years old, and I dreamt that my neighbor was run over by a cement truck. I still despise driving behind them!
The cover is adorable, by the way. Did they ask for your opinion on what it should look like before they sent it to you? How much input did you get?
Thanks, Catt! I love the cover, too. It was designed by a freelance artist who lives in Knoxville, TN – a town that plays a prominent role in the book itself. (Kinda cool!) I did have a degree of input, which is unusual for a first-time author, from what I understand. When my editor asked if I had any ideas regarding the cover, I recommended that the designer look at the bazillions of old photographs of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that are available through government agencies. A few months later, I found out that not only would old photos be used, but there would be a whole collage of them, like a scrapbook. And they’d be doodled upon. I loved the idea, because Autumn (the main character) is an artist. When I saw the final cover, I loved-loved-loved it! Still do!
As a side note, because the cover designer lives in Knoxville, so does the cover model – the girl in the bottom right corner (with the green mustache!). Knoxville is a short drive from me – only three hours. And because it plays such a big role in the book, I did a signing at a Borders bookstore there on November 1st. Imagine how excited I was to look up and SEE the girl on the cover, standing in line! Her name is Amber Rose. She does not have a green mustache. J I’ve attached a picture of us together. Such fun!
I'll start with asking about the cover. It's adorable, did they ask for your opinion on what it should look like before they sent it to you? How much input did you get?

How did you get the idea?
I first got the idea for a book set in Cades Cove back in 2002, when I was on a guided tour of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I researched the story for a year or so, and started writing it in early 2004. It was accepted by Delacorte in February 2007, and went through three rounds of revisions until it reached the final state in spring of this year. It hit shelves in October. So…six years from idea to shelf!
How did you find out about the class of 2k8?
Pure luck! I read an article in the 2008 Children’s Writers and Illustrators Market written by Greg Fishbone, the president of the Class of 2k7. In the article, he mentioned that a Class of 2k8 was in the works. I emailed the contact person he gave, but the Class was already full. I was placed on a waiting list. After a few weeks, I received word that someone’s publication date had been pushed back to 2009 (not uncommon), and there was now an opening. Would I be interested? I jumped at the chance! It’s been a wonderful experience, being a part of the beginning of 27 careers!
Why did you want to write for young adults?
When I think back on the books that have had the biggest impact on me, a majority of those were read in my young adult years. I think most people my age would have a similar list, one that includes a ton of books first read as a teen. Young adults are open-minded, and are willing to contemplate new ideas and concepts in a way that adults aren’t. I think young adult literature is the best literature out there.
Who was your favorite character to write?
Oh, I’d have such a hard time choosing! Autumn was a delight, because she’s so much braver than I am, and her worldview is so funny! And then I loved writing Gramps, because he’s just a big prankster. But as we got further along in the editing process, I really grew to love Cody (Autumn’s best friend) and Katie (her older sister). My editor immediately noticed that in the first version of the story, these two did not play a large enough role. As their roles grew, I appreciated them all the more!
"AUTUMN WINIFRED OLIVER prides herself on doing things her way. But she meets her match when she, her mama, and her pin-curled older sis, Katie, move in with her cantankerous Gramps. The Oliver gals were supposed to join Pop in Knoxville for some big-city living, but Gramps’s recent sick spell convinced Mama to stay put in Cades Cove, a place of swishy meadows and shady hollers that lies on the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains.
And it’s not like there’s nothing going on in the Cove. Folks are all aflutter about turning their land into a national park, and Autumn’s not sure what to think. Loggers like Pop need jobs, but if things keep going at the current rate, the forests will soon be chopped to bits. And Gramps seems to think there’s some serious tourist money to be made. Looks like something different is definitely in order. . . ."
Normally, I don't read that much middle grade books, but I made an exception and I'm very glad I did. Autumn is a very awesome character and hilariously creative. Not only is she down to earth, she's spunky and surpringly relatable even though she's from a different time period.
Though a little bit slow in some parts, it made up for it by having a wide range of characters varying from the most interesting personalities. Autumn is not the only character that grabs your attention, Autumn's grouchy but awesome grandfather makes me wish he was a part of my family and so many others that are special in their own way.
Packed with southern charm and originality, Autumn Winifred Oliver Does Things Different earns a solid 4 stars. It's one-of-a-kind story will make it memorable for a very, very long time.

Why do you think people love Twilight so much?
Everyone loves and wants what they can’t have. I believe Bella is the only person on this planet that has the second most attractive vampire ever to love her unconditionally AND to top it off a shape-shifter/werewolf who lusts after her as well. Wouldn’t you just LOVE to be in her shoes? Oh and the fact that this vampire is the only man left on this Earth who is a gentleman….man how much we wish for one of those!
It’s a marketing marvel. It’s a very well put together piece of literature when it comes to selectively targeting the biggest consumer demographic (teen girls). Psychologically it is also perfect for the market as well. Who isn’t attracted to a super strong immortal that’s seemingly perfect?
What are your top 7 favorite books (besides the Twilight series)?
Fruits Basket
Harry Potter (to be more specific, the 3rd and 7th book)
Can You Keep a Secret?
The Sight
The Treasure Seeker
Lovely Bones
Prom Nights from Hell
Dean Koontz Frankenstein
Odd Thomas
The Husband
The Giver
Velocity
Night
Harry Potter Book 6
Why did you decide to make videos?
To be honest our hidden agenda was to only make videos for the sake of getting noticed by many Twilighters so that we may eventually become noticed by Stephenie Meyer or Summit Entertainment (trying to go to the premiere of Twilight). Although, creating all these videos I have started to actually enjoy being one of those passionate fans that voice what we all love, and getting such positive feedback from our viewers saying that I make them laugh or in general they like what I talk about really brightens my day and makes me what to post more videos. So our initial intention is totally out of our brains!
Monica has always been in love with the saga, every time she talked about it I saw her eyes lighting up and she had a big smile -- and since I love her very much I wanted to do this for her to make her happy.
AWWW
Who is your favorite character?
This is a toughie for me. Before the movie was even thought of being produced, my absolute favorite was Edward. His sweet, moral, protective and charming nature really swooned me off my feet. But reading Breaking Dawn and seeing the actors that were chosen for the Twilight movie, I have opened up a spot in my heart for Jasper and Emmett. Jasper just has this aura (and I don’t think it’s his powers) that just makes you love him, and Emmett’s playfulness and naughty jokes just allows you to relax and have a good time. So it’s truly hard for me to decide, oh and we cannot forget about Alice!
Mine would be Alice and Aro. I love Alice because she’s a very enthusiastic character and she gets me way too emotional when I read her dialogue. Her height, cuteness and perkiness also get to me! Aro is on the fav’s as well because for a really old guy he views life in a brighter perspective than his brother’s and enjoys dealing with any situation cool calm and collectively.
How long have you and Alex been going out?
The day Alexander asked me out was September 28 / 2006, so if we count from November 28/2008, that would be 2 years and 2 months!
Since my blog is called Dreaming of Books, what is the most craziest dream you've ever gotten?
There is one that I vaguely recall. I was on the Black Pearl with the whole Pirate of the Caribbean cast, and Davy-Jones was trying to take over the ship so we were fighting them and Jack was imprisoned. So I went to go and save my lover ( I mean… friend) so I got him out and we ran towards the beach (it started at a dock and ended up at a beach?) and we held hands and ran into the water. We dove under and waited for the sun to set so this teleport thingy (not quite sure wait we were waiting for) would happen, just as it happened in the third movie. And while we were waiting some uhm…things happened….PG13. (HEHE my dream worked out better then Alex’s ;) )
I was in a house of prostitutes and I enter into one of the girls beds, only she’s not a girl – SHE A MAN! He punches me in the stomach and I awake. This is my unconscious mind telling me to fear all other women (that or Monica has been whispering threats into my ear while I sleep again).
How are you going to celebrate the Twilight movie release?
Well for the release of the third Pirates movie, Alex romantically surprised me with premiere tickets that involved a picture frame. So….I’m HOPING something romantic will happen with Twilight (hint hint nudge nudge).
Party possibly – followed by a long chat about how much we hate / love it.
Why do you think people should read the books?
If you’re sick and tired of the man that you have, you can fall in love with this one! …I’m kidding! I would say if you’re a complete hopeless romantic like I am; like a bit of smut, angst and action then this book is perfectly designed to bring out those emotions with a high degree of effectiveness. So if you want to feel a book you should definitely feel this saga!
I think it gives hope to romance and the possibility of another world that is very close to our own. A life style that, despite its setbacks it’s a very attractive thought.
What is the most die hard thing you've done as a Twilighter?
Well I pulled a total 6-year-old-stomp-my-foot-yell-
Dyed my hair colour to be like Edwards and dressed up for the book premiere.
If you could ask one your favorite Twilight character or the Twilight cast or even Stephenie Meyer a question, what would it be?
I would ask the Twilight Cast: If you were able to choose who you wanted to act as, which Cullen or Nomad or even Human, who would you choose? (Or would you keep who you were assigned?) And why?
I would ask Stephanie Meyer why she all of a sudden decided to write this book~ was Twilight the only thing on her mind (was her dream that captivating?)?
What is your favorite book out of the series?
It’s a tie between Twilight and Eclipse because they have the most Edward in it. But if I were to think of Bella, the fourth book – I cannot stop re-reading Book One and Three in Breaking Dawn, it was written so well and I love re-feeling (now I’m making up words) the chemistry felt between Edward and Bella since that was taken out of Book Two.
The last book – I think it’s the perfect ending. I mean common a vampire army with super power about to clash? That spells awesome.
Have you ever had any fangirly moments?
All the time but I keep my excitement and spaz internally so no one can see!
I opened the fringe and found a salad dressing called “Renee’s” and I started to get all giggly inside.
If Edward Cullen was your piano teacher, how would you react?
I would continuously stare into his eyes as he gently guides my fingers over the piano and we produce the most beautiful music anyone is so lucky to hear...*sighs – becomes stuck in day-dream mode*
I would hate life so much. I hate anyone who can play piano better than me. Plus let’s be real here – do you really want your teacher to be a freakin’ expert?
Yeah, I've been there. No fun at all.
Who would you rather be stuck in a room with? (It can be anyone Twilight related.)
I’m not going to be picky (as MUCH as I just want to yell out “EDWARD, I WANT EDWARD!”) If I got to be in a room with any of the Cullen children (sorry Carlisle and Esme) then I wouldn’t mind at all. OR if Stephenie Meyer creates another sequel that revolves around Bella and Edward creating a BOY child…then I would want to be stuck in a room with him :D
It would be Aro because I would love to be able to probe Aro’s mind. I’m curious as to what made him the way he was.
If Stephenie Meyer walked into the room right now, how would you react?
Well….it would start off with an open gapped mouth….followed by a little squeal…my eyes would become a bit wet….I’d run up to her and give a bear hug… and BEG her to write a character that’s based off of me or has my name ( I won’t be picky :P ) and to give me a vampire of my own….followed by me inviting her to come over for dinner.
HOLY- MORMON – MOTHER! ARE YOU STEPHENIE MEYER!? *continues to mumble in shock*
